SLATHER IT ON
Finding your summer sun balance and chemical-free sunscreen.

Doctors have been warning us for years about the harmful effects of long-term exposure to the sun, but many fail to emphasize the benefits of Mother Nature's lightbulb. Exposure to UV sunlight triggers the production of vitamin D in our skin. Vitamin D prevents cancer and helps our bodies use calcium, the mineral that gives strength to our bones and teeth and helps nerves function properly.
When out in the heat, many find it difficult to pinpoint their “sun balance,” the duration of time they can be in the sun before the skin starts to burn. If you're going to be out for extended amounts of time, dodge damage by regularly applying sunscreen. The type of sunscreen used is equally as important.
There are two types of sunscreen; inorganic, which contains man-made synthetic chemicals, and organic, which employs herbs, plants and minerals to protect skin from UV rays. While both serve their intended purpose, the chemicals in most mainstream sunscreens are the ones chemists are told to keep at a safe distance from their skin in the lab. Not exactly a high selling point.

Common Sunscreen Chemicals:
benzophenones
methyl anthranilate
cinnamates
homosalates
saliclyates

Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are minerals that block UV light from reaching your skin. Some environmental groups have stated that these two minerals could have negative effects on the environment, but most natural sunscreens do use one or both of them.
Organic ingredients can actually moisturize while they protect. But they are natural, so it’s important to know that they will break down over time. If you use sunscreen frequently than you won’t have to worry about the product losing its effectiveness. Just don't let it sit all winter.
Unfortunately, most mainstream stores don't carry organic sunscreens. Check your local co-op or health foods store. You can also purchase some great organic sunscreens online if you don’t have one of these stores in your community. My favorite version is one made completely of edelweiss flowers, a powerful plant that absorbs harmful UV rays. Spread your favorite on thick and head out for a healthy, sunny day.
